Telecommunications Technical Officer

Install, maintain and troubleshoot the infrastructure that connects South Africa

Telecommunications Technical Officers keep the country connected. Whether it’s fibre optic cables, mobile towers, or satellite links, they install, test, and maintain the physical and electronic infrastructure that carries voice, data, and broadcast signals across South Africa every day.

Transmission Systems
Think of transmission systems as the highways for data — fibre optic cables carry information as pulses of light at extraordinary speed, while microwave links and satellite systems handle connections where laying cable is impractical. Officers install and test these systems to ensure signals travel cleanly from one point to another.

Test & Measurement Equpiment
When a signal degrades or a connection drops, officers use specialist tools — optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs), spectrum analysers, and network testers — to find the exact point of failure and fix it efficiently.

Key Technologies

The telecommunications landscape spans multiple technologies.

  • Fibre optic networks — the backbone of modern broadband
  • 4G / 5G infrastructure — mobile connectivity across the country
  • VoIP & IP telephony — digital voice communication over data networks

Soft Skills

People & Work Style

Technical Precision:
Splicing a fibre optic cable requires microscopic accuracy. A misaligned joint causes signal loss across an entire network. Officers take great care with physical installations, following exact procedures every time.

Problem Solving Under Pressure:
A mobile tower outage affects thousands of users simultaneously. Officers need to diagnose and resolve faults quickly and calmly — often working in the field, far from the support of an office environment.

Physical Fitness & Safety Awareness:
The role often involves working at height — on towers, rooftops, and poles. Officers are trained in working-at-height safety protocols and must always follow them, without exception.

Documentation Discipline:
Every installation, test result, and fault resolution gets recorded. Accurate field records protect the organisation legally, support future maintenance, and help other technicians who work on the same infrastructure later.

Log initial findings and escalate if specialist equipment is required

13:00 - 14:00
Lunch & Recharge

Break between sites — physical field work demands proper rest

Check in with the control room for any urgent call-outs

14:00 - 16:30
Installation & Commissioning

Install new equipment or extend existing infrastructure at the assigned site

Run performance tests to verify the installation meets technical specifications

Complete all required documentation before leaving the site

16:30 - 17:30
End-of-Day Reporting
